The MERLE dress was designed to be worn first as a dress and later as a tunic. It is knitted in a left-hand direction, while the chest area is worked in a stretchy rib pattern to adapt flexibly to the child's body.
For example, if the dress is worn at 6 months, thanks to the clever fit it can continue to be used as a tunic until at least the age of 2.
